Insurance Renewal Checklist: What to Check

Prepare for insurance renewal: verify dates, compare cover and excesses, check payment terms and keep confirmation of your decision.

1. Confirm the dates and renewal process

Read the notice to see when current cover ends and whether renewal is automatic or requires action. Check the method and deadline for stopping an automatic renewal. Do not assume a reminder from a wallet changes the insurer’s process.

2. Check your circumstances

Review the people, address, vehicles and other items recorded. Consider changes since last year and tell your insurer what it requires you to disclose. Examples include moving home or changing how you use a vehicle. The information an insurer needs depends on the policy.

3. Compare more than the price

Check the total annual cost, any instalment charges, excesses, limits, exclusions and optional extras. Compare equivalent cover where possible. A lower premium may come with different conditions. Ask for clarification before accepting an offer you do not understand.

4. Make and confirm your decision

Follow the insurer’s process to renew, change or cancel. If arranging replacement insurance, check start and end times and any waiting periods so the transition matches your needs. Do not rely on cancelling a payment instruction as proof that a policy has been cancelled.

5. Update your records

Save the confirmation, new schedule, wording and endorsements. Update your wallet’s premium and dates from the final documents. Keep the old period clearly identified. Check your reminder preferences and continue reading messages from the insurer throughout the year.

Will insurance renew automatically?

It depends on your policy. Read the renewal notice and ask your insurer if the process or deadline is unclear.

Does cancelling a direct debit cancel my policy?

Do not assume so. Follow your insurer’s cancellation process and obtain confirmation; stopping a payment may leave an outstanding obligation.
